The Raw 1976 Star Wars Film Look

May the fourth be with you! I know it’s actually May 5th, so I missed it by a day. But I still wanted to share this. To celebrate Star Wars Day, you can download this LUT inspired by the original 1976 Star Wars trailer. It gives your video a raw, vintage film style with low dynamic range, deep shadows, and a purple tint with some pinkish reds. It makes your footage look like it’s straight out of the 1970s.

Note: Some other trailers from 1976 look more colorful because they have been remastered and cleaned up. This LUT is based on the untouched original trailer, not any remastered versions. Remember, this was the 1970s!

For best results, combine it with a VHS effect like this one for DaVinci Resolve. Or, for a simpler approach, just add a Box Blur to simulate lower resolution.

The examples below show how this LUT changes the colors, but they do not have the low-res look applied.

Color Grading

This LUT crushes the shadows and dims the exposure to match the original Star Wars footage from 1976. It has a purple tint and reds appear pink.

Skin Tone Protection

In the free download, you’ll receive the standard Star Wars 1976 LUT. If you are a Studio member, you will receive an additional LUT with skin tone protection. This LUT uses VOXCOLOR’s Skin Tone Protection algorithm to restore the original skin tones, making it ideal for portraits.
