Dark and Moody

Sutro is one of Instagram’s original filters from the app’s launch in 2010. It gives photos a moody, dramatic look that makes them appear mysterious. Among the early Instagram filters, Sutro was one of the moodiest.

Also, unlike other early Instagram filters, Sutro does not overexpose the photo or make skin tones look saturated and contrasty. This makes it a good choice for a more natural look.

This preset is part of the 2010s Instagram aesthetic project where I recreate the look of retro Instagram filters.

Color Grading

Sutro dims your photo and lifts the shadows to create a film-like look. Early Instagram filters were made using RGB curves, which can only tint the image based on brightness, not shift the actual hues. That’s why, in the image below, you don’t see much color difference.

Android Instructions
  1. Download the preset
  2. Click here to open Lightroom
  3. Select any photo then go to the Presets section.
  4. Tap on the menu (top-right) then select Import Presets. Load the zip file you just downloaded.
  5. Find the preset in Presets > Yours > www.freepresets.io.
